Thinking of buying a NEXT canoe, but concerned that I've read several reviews that the seat slips out of the mount. Has Old Town addressed this issue?

Asked by: Jaymz611
Thank you for your inquiry about the Next seat system. There is a black strap located under the front section of the seat that is connecting the seat brackets side-to-side. Ensure that this strap is pulled tight before paddling - it acts like a thwart and helps keep the sides pulled close so the seat sits snug in the seat brackets. If for some reason you have any problems with the seat slipping from the brackets, please call our Customer Service department direct and we can certainly assist you. How high off the floor of the boat is your butt while sitting in the seat? What is the best solo boat for the highest position?

Asked by: DJ do
I became intrigued with the Next canoe the first time I saw it. I found and purchased one from an outfitter as nobody near where we live on LI NY had any available to try out. Our excursions involve almost exclusively day trips and for hopping in and out, throwing a in a cooler, camera etc... it's been everything I could hope for. It does paddle like a kayak with a kayak paddle however one annoying thing is that seemingly wherever I set my drip rings I always seem to get wet and there is no option for any kind of skirt to keep you dry. Paddling with a single blade is very canoe like except it is a little awkward sitting close to the floor and occasionally contacting the seat back. Takes a little getting used to like anything. In terms of taking this on a week long trip I would say that a solo or pack canoe would be a better choice because of it's higher sides and greater width. While I do like the Next canoe for day tripping it has it's limitations.

I’d like to do canoe trips of a week or so on relatively calm water and am wondering if the Next would serve that purpose with few limitations?  The 450-pound capacity certain suggests this should be possible given a reasonable paddler weight.

Asked by: Mark D
The Next canoe may be up for a week-long canoe trip but that may all depend on space and how much load capacity that you plan to bring with you. This boat has a max capacity of 450 lbs. And once you get towards a max load for a canoe, it does tend to feel a little uneasy. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions.

Can the Next be retrofitted and paddled with a traditional bench seat? Is it much faster and better tracking than my Pack 119?

Asked by: joe paddler
The Next comes with the Element Seating System but you could always remove it and install a black nylon webbed seat if you wanted to aftermarket. This canoe will be more efficient and faster than the Pack given that it is slightly longer with a longer keel line. If anything, for a bench-style seat what we have that should fit is the 34” bow/stern web seats – item number #01.1315.2602 for $59.99 each. The seats are not pre-cut or drilled so you will need to trim them down to fit your canoe and then drill holes for the screws to install them - If you need replacement hardware (bolts and dowels), you can select from a 4”, 5”, or 6” bolt - the standard size is 4”. The longer the bolts, the lower you sit in the canoe which will lower your center of gravity giving you more overall stability. Please use the chart below and use the correct dowel sizes that match up with the bolt sizes your using. We only offer a 3.25” dowel, so it can be trimmed down to accommodate the 4” and 5” bolts. 4” bolts use 1.5” dowels 5” bolts us 2 3/8” dowels 6” bolts use 3.25” dowels You can order these parts online, over the phone with any of our reps, or through one of your local dealers. I hope this helps and please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you and have a great day.

Can you row it

Asked by: Glenno
The Next canoe is not set up or deigned for rowing, but it certainly could be done by installing oar locks and sockets.

Do you have suggestions on how to best portage a Next canoe since it does not have a yoke and it does seem practical to add one? Thanks!

Asked by: Smokey
If you have the seat is installed, you can use it to carry the canoe on your head.
